Secondary - Library

The 24,000-volume Leroy J. and Doris Douglass Library provides students, faculty, staff, and parents with the necessary educational resources to promote and enhance learning at Lakeland Christian School. In addition to the many books and periodicals on hand, the library sponsors a number of yearly events designed to encourage reading.

Library Services:

Student Library Usage
Each week, students in grades K-5 have a period of time set aside to visit the library. During this time, students may check out books and are taught basic library skills. Students in grades 3-12 have open access to the library. Students may check out a variety of fiction and nonfiction books or use reference materials in the library. Students have access to several computers that can be used for word processing, PowerPoint, and Internet research.  Teachers may reserve the library in order to let classes research for papers and projects.

Research Databases

Secondary students and faculty have access to three  different research databases: SIRS Researcher (http://www.proquestk12.com), Science Online (http://www.fofweb.com), and added this year, Literature Online (http://www.proquestk12.com). These databases serve as a valuable resource for students when doing research and can also be accessed from home. User names and passwords are available by contacting the library staff.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online
The LCS library recently purchased the Encyclopedia Britannica Online School Edition reference set. This online resource includes approximately 400 periodicals and includes information for all grade levels. Students using this resource from home should use the following link to access the site: http://school.eb.com.  Contact the library for user name and password.

Parent Resource Center
The LCS library has a special resource section available for the parents of our students. This section includes a number of books and tapes by notable authors such as Dr. James Dobson, Cynthia Tobias, Gary Smalley, Dr. Russell Barkley and many others. Subjects range from mothering to parenting strong-willed children to dealing with Attention Deficit Disorder.

Library Events:
Sonshine Harbor Christian Book Fair
For one week during the month of October, LCS hosts the Sonshine Harbor Christian Book Fair. Students and adults may purchase books for all ages, along with posters, videos and CDs. Funds raised during this week help purchase new books for the library. In October, 2005, the book fair sales reached nearly $12,000.  LCS benefits from this event by receiving discounted products, books, and funds for the library.

Young Authors & Illustrators Conference
Every spring, elementary students at LCS participate in the annual Young Authors & Illustrators Conference. During this week-long event, students are encouraged to write and illustrate books. When available, the library invites Christian authors to visit during this time.
