We all enjoy taking time with our family and loved ones for long anticipated summer vacations and summer camps to celebrate the break in between this school year and the upcoming one. Have you considered…

We all enjoy taking time with our family and loved ones for long anticipated summer vacations and summer camps to celebrate the break in between this school year and the upcoming one. Have you considered during this time, you or your family member may end up with an injury or illness? Do you have ICE? No, I’m not talking about the kind that I give out in the clinic for injuries or even the really good ice at Sonic or Chick Fil A that we enjoy. I’m asking if you have an In Case of Emergency listed in your phone. This would be your “go to” person when you’re unable to speak for yourself.

Here’s the history on ICE. After the London bombings in 2005; Bob Brotchie, a paramedic, started promoting the use of ICE as a compliment to other means of obtaining emergency medical information. He has seen firsthand the effectiveness of medical intervention from having quick access to someone’s history when they are unable to give this information on their own. In this instance it would be a way to reach your emergency contact on your phone. Now this is not without some limitations. In some cases, if you have a pass code lock on your screen, this would prevent emergency personnel from gaining access to your information. There are also apps available that would store your emergency contact and health information while giving access to it when your phone is in emergency mode. Two examples available for iPhone users are Smart-ice4family and Smart-ice. These apps are ones that have been endorsed by Bob Brotchie on his website incaseofemergency.org . In the instance that your phone is unavailable or inoperable, you would also want to keep a paper copy of your emergency contact information in your wallet, purse, or vehicle. Here is a link to AAA’s ICE card http://bit.ly/17JfAnt

Also below are steps to place your ICE contact in your phone.

Go to ‘add contacts’ in your phone

In the First Name field enter ‘ICE John Smith-brother’

Fill in the phone numbers and other remaining fields and save.

*If you have multiple ICE contacts, you may enter ICE-1, ICE-2, etc. to capture all of these.

Have a fun and safe summer! If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me lkinney@lcsonline.org

Mrs. Lydia Kinney is the LCS school nurse. If you have questions for Lydia about ICE, feel free to email her at lkinney@lcsonline.org.

From May 22-24, LCS families have the opportunity to support the Middle School Market, located in the teacher work room on the 3rd floor of the Elementary/Middle School building. Middle schoolers are busy making items ranging from baked goods to jewelry and hair items to clothing.

Your purchase of these items will support work we are doing with the Bophelong Community School in Pretoria, South Africa.

Students and administrators from the South African school visited LCS several months ago and want to develop ways for kids to get to know each other and build a learning exchange. The goal is to use technology resources to link students and teachers for collaboration in STEM project-based learning. Our market will help the South African school purchase internet access so we can connect using technology like Skype.

Items in the Middle School Market range in price from 50 cents to $10.00. Most are in the $1.00-$3.00 range. Elementary students will be visiting the market with their classes and a “Market Cart” will also make an appearance on the playground before school. Please contact Mrs. Canady with questions at jcanady@lcsonline.org.

The American Museum of Natural History in New York has selected Julia Canady, an 8th grader at Lakeland Christian School, as a recipient of the Young Naturalist Awards for 2013. Her essay on “Weed Warfare: Investigating Allelopathy” was one of two national winners for the eighth grade.

The nationwide science-based research competition for kids in grades 7 through 12 is funded by Alcoa Foundation. The Young Naturalist Awards program was developed by the Museum to promote young people’s active participation in the sciences and to recognize excellence in biology, ecology, Earth science, and astronomy. Over 900 essays were judged by a panel of scientists, educators, environmentalists, and writers.

“I am honored to receive the Young Naturalist Award. I hope my work will encourage other kids to engage in scientific research,” says Julia. “It is exciting to make discoveries that may result in helpful new ways to solve old problems.”

Julia will be flown to New York City for a ceremony and luncheon at the American Museum of Natural History on Friday, May 31 to receive her award along with 11 other student winners from across the country. She will receive a cash award and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum. Winning essays will be posted on the website. http://www.amnh.org/learn-teach/young-naturalist-awards

Julia’s work focused on the development of a new “green” herbicide using an extract made from one invasive plant to control the growth of others. Spanning three years, her research included both fieldwork and laboratory studies, and investigated the effectiveness of the extract on Palmer’s amaranth and air potato. Her research began because of her concern about managing invasive plants in Faith’s Forest, a three-acre wild area on her school campus.

Julia is a student in the RISE Institute at Lakeland Christian School. The program focuses on Research, Innovation, STEM learning, and Entrepreneurship. She recently won Best of Show in Jr. Biological Sciences at the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair in addition to first place in the Botany division.

The Young Naturalist Awards is a program of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology (NCSLET), part of the Museum’s Department of Education. Founded in 1997, NCSLET taps the Museum’s unparalleled scientific resources—a vast physical collection, cutting-edge research, and dynamic and engaging exhibitions—and makes them available to the broadest possible audience across the nation and throughout the world.
