I Love Naps!




Who’s with me?

I was that kid in kindergarten who was still asleep while everyone else was up and playing, and I still believe there is nothing better than a Sunday afternoon nap.  Growing up, we would eat a big lunch after church, and then my parents would have me curl up in my bed and read to me the “funny papers.” I was a goner.  Best naps ever.  I would wake up with lines on my face and drool on my pillow.

It’s funny how things change as we grow older.

My husband and I regularly debate whether naps are necessary.  For him and our son, naps are not necessary.  For me and our daughter...YES PLEASE!

Nowadays, our culture impresses on us the need  to fill every time slot with something productive.  What makes us feel that naps are not productive?  Jesus tells us to observe the Sabbath as a day of rest.  He also speaks of rest in the Bible.  Matthew 11:28-30 says “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  ESV

The Benefits of Sleep

Did you know that children require rest, sleep, and naps for better brain development? It gives their body a chance to focus on growth during this time.  Let your kids take a nap.  You could take a nap with them.  Naps help your body recharge.  Everyone may wake up with better dispositions to face the rest of the day.

How many times have you felt rushed or like your mind is not where it needs to be during your quiet time or even during church?  There are times when I go into church on Sunday and feel inadequately prepared for the worship service.  How awful is that?  I am selfish for taking time away from abiding in Christ.  He wants us to be done with work and focused completely on Him.  Rest!  Take time out to decompress, recharge, and focus all of your efforts on Him.

Now I know some of you are thinking: “Well doctors, nurses, and emergency personnel are required to work odd hours including Sundays" or "My clients need me to be available.”  Yes! There are times when it is necessary, and we are required to work. But for some, the constant work you speak of is not a healthy reflection of the ongoing choices you make.  And being a rehabilitated workaholic, I urge you to step back and look at what constant work is doing to your walk with Christ, your relationships with family, and your overall health.  It is far too easy to let work consume your time and priorities.

Take the time to rest in Him and take a nap!
