Today’s LCS Students Are Tomorrow’s…(You Name It!)

For movie buffs, the Oscars are the highlight of the year. This year’s ceremony is right around the corner, as the 85th Academy Awards will be presented on February 24th. I don’t really care about the dresses and all the hyped hoopla on the pre-show red carpet, but I’m all about the movies, actors and directors nominated for their excellence. One of the nominees for Best Picture is the American historical drama film, Lincoln.

I was among the crowd of movie-goers who flocked (and are still flocking!) to the theaters to see Steven Spielberg’s latest epic film. While I was certainly captivated by this portrayal of American history, I was equally amazed that actor Daniel Day-Lewis could look that much like our nation’s 16th President. Talk about an Oscar contender!

As I watched the movie, I was reminded how our country is forever indebted to Lincoln for his sweeping accomplishments. Although he is most noted for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, which began the process of freedom for America’s slaves, he was also an unfaltering commander in chief during the Civil War, preserving the United States as one nation. In addition, his foreign policy was successful in preventing other countries from intervening in the Civil War.

Lincoln was also one of the most quoted Presidents of all time. Consider the following, attributed to Abe:

“A child is a person who is going to carry on what you started. A child is going to sit where you’re sitting, and when you’re gone, attend to those things which you think are important. You may adopt all the policies you please, but how they’ll be carried out depends on that child. He or she will assume control of your cities, states, and nations. The fate of humanity is in his or her hands.”

In essence, Lincoln was saying (in an oft-quoted reference), “The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.”

What a great affirmation of the important work being done at Lakeland Christian School! And what a significant inspiration for our professional Christian educators to continue to strive for excellence. Realizing they are deeply influencing the next generation, LCS faculty members take seriously their high calling to sharpen minds while they shepherd hearts. And teachers can exercise extra patience by realizing that they, too, are still a work in progress (Sanctification!).

There are many good schools that educate with a high degree of proficiency. However, it is in the Biblically based Christian school, like LCS, where a consequential difference takes place. With all subjects taught in the light of God’s Word, students are led to see how the Truth of life impacts all that they learn and do. It’s an education with critical implications for their lifetime, and into eternity.

At LCS, it’s an education preparing the next generation of leaders in a wide variety of fields and disciplines. We realize that those souls sitting in our classrooms today will truly be caring for us tomorrow! With that in mind, I’m honored to be part of a place equipping children and young people for a noteworthy, impactful future – in their homes, within their churches and through their vocations.

And, who knows, the next Abraham Lincoln could be on the LCS campus this very day.
