Lakeland Christian SchoolOne of the core values of LCS is the belief that we are partnering with parents in the Christian education of their children. We believe that mutual respect, communication and involvement by all partners is essential for success of our mission.LCS is a school. We believe that being a Christian school and being a top-flight academic institution should not be mutually exclusive. On the contrary, we take the mandate of Colossians 3:23 that calls us to strive to be the best. We provide a variety of rigorous, engaging, academic and co-curricular activities that enable students to identify and express the full range of their unique gifts and abilities.
Dear LCS Family,
When I began my teaching career at LCS in 1972, Mary and I were newlyweds, there were 460 students and 22 faculty members. I was coming home to the school I attended from 4th-9th grade and was back to see the first high school graduation. Mary joined me on the faculty the following year.
I am grateful for the influence of John Bechtel and other teachers while a student here. I was privileged to serve under Dr. Derek Keenan during his 21 years as Principal. He led a fledgling school trying to find our way to be a credible educational setting poised to take the next steps forward. When I was asked to take the leadership of LCS in 1996, I accepted by saying that I considered the position to be one of sacred trust. I have endeavored to hold this trust faithfully before the Lord each day.
I want to express my appreciation to all who have served on the LCS Board of Directors for the past fifty years. Their faithful support with accountability has facilitated my professional and spiritual growth. I am especially grateful for the strong leadership of Mr. Kevin Knowlton who has served as Chairman for over 20 years. The Board’s unwavering commitment to Education in the Light of God’s Word has set the priorities and preserved clarity of mission throughout our history.
I am grateful as well for the many colleagues, students, and parents that I have been privileged to know over the years. I am confident I have learned more from you than I may have taught you.
LCS is well positioned for this time of transition. We have begun to implement the goals of a new strategic plan that sets priorities for the next 3-5 years for academics, governance, advancement, and finances. We are blessed with a strong financial position, 1,100+ students, and a faithful faculty and staff. The Forging the Next Foundation Campaign is nearing the $19.1M goal with plans to open the high school building in August 2023. Our commitment to Education in the Light of God’s Word is firm.
The Board of Directors has retained the Carter Baldwin search firm to assist us in identifying the next Head of School. An FAQ on this process is provided on the back of this document.
At a time of leadership transition in the history of God’s people, Moses told them, “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)
We look forward to the future of LCS with confidence that the Lord goes before us.
Mike Sligh, Ed. D. Head of School
