All-County girls soccer: LCS’s Carnes raised her game to higher level
“I thought this year she really was more of the whole package,” coach Jason Streets said. “This year, she was such a good version of herself.”
In an early-season game against Lakewood Ranch, Lakeland Christian took an offensive corner kick that was poorly played to the top of the box, giving the Mustangs a counter attack.
With defender Eden Guynn having moved up because she excels at headers off corner kicks, Lakewood Ranch had a clear path to the goal.
But LCS junior Katie Carnes had other ideas. The 5-foot forward sprinted from the corner flag, ran down the opposing player, won the ball back and started an offensive attack.
Already the Vikings’ leading scorer the previous two seasons, Carnes emerged as a complete player, again leading her team offensively but also making plays all over the field.
Carnes is The Ledger’s 2019-20 Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
