60 Years Later: Our Mission Remains the Same
I am often asked if I am enjoying retirement. My usual response is that I haven’t quite gotten there just yet! I find myself heading to LCS most mornings and spending some time working on creating an archive collection of historical documents (pictures, yearbooks, class histories, publications, DVDs of programs, etc.) Later this year I hope you will see some evidence of the work that is being done.
Recently I received a letter from Evelyn Wheeler Towler, Lakeland Christian Grammar School’s first principal. I was encouraged by her ongoing interest in LCS. She wrote: “I don’t enjoy many aspects of growing old, but one of the perks is being able to see how the Lord has blessed the school and what a testimony it is to the entire Lakeland area and to the world as its graduates have gone out in ministry to so many countries. I feel like a proud mama, especially when I see what a wonderful job my former students have done and are doing! I thank God daily for each one of you, as well as the rest of the faculty and staff that the Lord has put in place.”
Today I appreciate more than ever the heritage that my family enjoys because of faithful men and women who sacrificed so much to breathe life into this place. Life that flows from the foundation of Scripture upon which our motto, Education in the Light of God’s Word, was established.
I am reminded how easy it would be to scuttle that old motto for one that is a bit more flashy. One that might appeal to more people and may help us fill up our empty seats. But filling seats, although important in holding down the cost of Christian education, without the daily emphasis on the integration of Scripture into every subject area would mean a different Lakeland Christian School. Our uniqueness would disappear and we would have no reason to exist. Won’t you please pray for the board, administration, faculty, and staff as they work to preserve what God so richly raised up sixty years ago?
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6: 10-12
